Giving Back and Reducing Food Waste with FoodSaver and FareShare
You may have heard of FareShare, a UK-wide charity aimed at relieving hunger and reducing food waste. It does this by diverting good quality surplus food that would otherwise have gone to waste and redistributing it to over 2,500 charity and community groups across the United Kingdom.
FareShare works with all sectors of the grocery supply chain including producers, manufacturers and retailers and in 2015/16 it redistributed 9,070 tonnes of food which would have otherwise gone to waste. FareShare works with major UK food retailers and their suppliers to reduce food waste, including Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco.
FareShare contributes enough food for the voluntary sector to serve up more than 18 million meals a year, helping to feed hundreds of thousands of people every week. This food is supplied to a broad range of grass root organisations all across the UK including homeless shelters, day centres, women's refuge centres and children's breakfast clubs. FoodSaver® and FareShare both believe in reducing food waste and helping people to make the most of food by reducing what is thrown away on a day-to-day basis.
"Every £1 that individuals and businesses donate to FareShare enables us to provide frontline charities with enough food to make four meals for vulnerable and hungry people here in the UK."
FoodSaver® has committed to donating 25,000 meals to the FareShare initiative, as well as combatting food waste every day by keep food fresher for longer.
Caley Eldred, Director of Fundraising at FareShare, said: "FareShare and FoodSaver share an ambition to ensure that no good food goes to waste, whether that's in the food and drink industry or in people's homes. Every £1 that individuals and businesses donate to FareShare enables us to provide frontline charities with enough food to make four meals for vulnerable and hungry people here in the UK, so we're very grateful for FoodSaver's generous support, which will help us get more good food to good causes."
The average UK family throws out the equivalent of £60 a month of food* but FoodSaver® vacuum sealing systems offer an alternative. FoodSaver® Vacuum Sealing Systems are designed to remove air and extend the freshness of food up to five times longer than conventional storage methods**. FoodSaver® has helped millions of households keep food fresh longer in the refrigerator, freezer and pantry.
