Handy Tips for Vacuum Sealing

Pantry and Cupboard Storage FAQs

As well as helping to retain the freshness and flavour of food in the fridge and freezer, the FoodSaver vacuum sealing system is perfect for preserving pantry and cupboard items like baked goods, snack foods and liquids, such as wine and olive oil.

Whether you’re an existing FoodSaver convert who’s looking for further inspiration on how to use the device, or a new customer who wants to find out more about what our vacuum sealers are capable of, you’ll find lots of information here on our Pantry & Cupboard Storage FAQ page.

With the help of our innovative sealing appliances and our strong, multi-purpose vacuum bags, you can easily preserve the freshness of those everyday cupboard essentials.

To provide you with further advice and inspiration on storing cupboard items with the FoodSaver vacuum sealing system, we’ve listed a few foodstuffs which benefit from being vacuum sealed before storing.

Snack Foods

No one likes stale crisps, popcorn, crackers or biscuits, so store these items in a FoodSaver Vacuum Sealing Canister to preserve their freshness, flavour and crunch for longer. Because the FoodSaver vacuum sealing system lets you store food for up to 5x longer, buy snack foods in bulk to save money.

Preserving Wine and Other Liquids

Purchase the FoodSaver Bottle Stopper for your vacuum sealing appliance, and you can retain the freshness, flavour and quality of a range of liquids, including wine, oils and vinegar. Perfect for the amateur chef or the keen wine buff, this handy bottle stopper fits the accessory hose on your FoodSaver appliance, and can be used to draw the air out of glass bottles — helping to preserve the liquid within for longer, even at room temperature.

Baked Goods

Stale bread is only ever good for ducks, so don’t let it ruin your morning’s breakfast. With the FoodSaver vacuum sealing system, you can preserve baked goods for weeks at room temperature. That’s because our bags and accessories offer a complete air-tight seal, preserving the freshness of a range of baked goods in the cupboards, fridge or freezer.

Coffee or Tea

Ground coffee and teabags will lose some of their flavour and delicate aromas when left exposed to the air, so it’s a good idea to store them in a FoodSaver Vacuum Sealing Canister. When storing coffee and tea bags in a canister, place a napkin over the item before sealing, as this will prevent the product from being drawn into the sealing area.

Sheets and Bedding

There’s nothing like fresh bed linen when it’s just been laundered, but sadly, this smell tends to fade when stored over time. Seal your bed linen in a FoodSaver vacuum bag, however, and you can preserve the just-washed smell of your bed sheets, so you can enjoy wonderfully fresh smelling bed linen every day.

Important Papers

If you regularly carry important papers for work, or like to preserve past bills and statements at home, the FoodSaver system can help you protect important documents. Providing an airtight, watertight and stain-proof seal, our strong and durable plastic bags are perfect for protecting papers in your home, office or in the depths of your briefcase.

Start the Day with a Good Breakfast!

Want to start your kids off with a hearty breakfast in the morning? Make bagels or English muffins with their favourite toppings (bacon, ham, egg, cheese, sausage, etc.), vacuum package into individual servings and store in the fridge. The kids can take out what they need to re-heat and start their day with a good breakfast.

Banana Saver

If you have ripe bananas for banana bread, but don’t have time to make it right away, here’s a handy tip. Peel the bananas, place in a FoodSaver® Bag, then vacuum package. You can keep them in the refrigerator for several days (even weeks) and they don’t discolour – they’re perfect for making the bread when you need them.

When Life Gives You Lemons…

… you can make fresh lemonade whenever you want it with your FoodSaver® Vacuum Sealing System. This is ideal if you have a lemon tree of your own, but if you don’t, buy lemons in season when they’re at their peak (and their lowest price). Then squeeze the juice, remove the seeds, and pour the juice into ice trays. After the juice has frozen, use Pint Size FoodSaver® Bags to make packets that hold 1-2 cubes. Then vacuum package and store in the freezer. Whenever you need fresh lemon juice, just thaw the packet, snip a corner and pour out the juice.

Portion Control

Friends on portion control-based diets like Weight Watchers® tell us that they use their FoodSaver® Vacuum Sealing System to keep their diet on track. They measure out portioned meals and seal them individually, then mark with the point value so that they can easily heat up the meal or snack with just the number of points they want to use. It saves time, because they don’t have to stop and figure out points every time they want to eat.

Second Homes and Caravans

Do you have a second home or caravan where you like to spend time during the holidays? With the FoodSaver system, you can make sure it feels like a home away from home at all times of the year by vacuum sealing linen, accessories and pantry items. Providing complete protection from dust, insects and unpleasant fusty odours, the FoodSaver system is ideal for helping to keep your holiday home fresh and inviting throughout the year.

Soup Smart

Want your family to have fresh, homemade soup for lunch? Prepare your favourite homemade soups, then ladle into a thermos so you’ll know the size of an individual serving. Then make up individual FoodSaver® Bags in the proper size, pour the soup into the bags, vacuum seal and freeze. In the morning, when your family goes to work or school, all they have to do is pick a bag out of the freezer, microwave, and pour into their thermos and enjoy for lunch.

For the Gardener

If you’re green fingered and like spending time in the garden, you can seal leftover seed packets using the FoodSaver vacuum sealing system — helping to keep them fresh and ready for future use.

Memory Books and Boxes

Perfect for scrapbooks, photo albums and other invaluable keepsakes, the FoodSaver vacuum sealing system lets you preserve and protect your special mementos from dirt, dust and signs of ageing. If left exposed to air, precious items can degrade over time, increasing the risk of losing those memories forever. But by vacuum sealing each item with the FoodSaver system, you can preserve items for years to come. Our bags and rolls even feature a special white space, where you can write a note reminding yourself what’s contained within.

Survival Kits

If you’re going away on a trip and need to take a few essentials to stay safe and comfortable as you travel, you can save space in your suitcase by vacuum sealing a bag of your essential personal hygiene items. By sealing such items in an airtight bag, you can more easily prevent leakage whilst saving lots of space. And, because our bags are translucent, you’ll easily be able to find what you’re looking for during transit.

For Cookie Monsters

Mix together your favourite cookie recipe and freeze the cookie dough. When you want some homemade cookies, take out the dough, thaw and bake – you’ll always have cookies on hand for guests – or for yourself!

Silverware

If you’d like to vacuum seal your valuable silverware against dust, dirt and signs of ageing, simply wrap any sharp edges with cloth (to avoid puncturing the plastic), pop into a special FoodSaver bag, and vacuum seal using your appliance. When it comes time to set the table for a special occasion, you’ll be amazed at the just-polished shine of your favourite silverware — saving you lots of time that would otherwise be spent polishing.

Can I keep comic books or coins in FoodSaver® Bags?

Yes, but we wouldn’t recommend vacuum sealing comic books or magazines, as the printed pages may stick together and transfer when air is removed. Instead, just heat seal the bag to protect the contents from dust, dirt and other elements. Coins can be vacuum sealed in FoodSaver bags, but we’d recommend wrapping them in cloth first to prevent any marks or abrasion.

Wedding Memories

To preserve the top of the wedding cake for newlyweds to enjoy on their first anniversary, be sure to freeze first, then vacuum package with your FoodSaver® Vacuum Sealing System. Put it back in the freezer, and the cake and frosting will be moist and delicious for that Happy Anniversary celebration.
